Introducing GDC 2.0: A New Cohort-Centric Design
The GDC has released GDC 2.0 which expands on the GDC Data Portal initially launched in 2016 by providing a cohort-centric design and new analysis tools. GDC 2.0 features include:
GDC 2.0 is a major update to the original GDC Data Portal introduced in 2016. This latest version adopts a “cohort-centric” workflow, in which users build custom sets of cases to analyze and introduces several new gene- and variant-level analysis tools. This webinar provides a tour of GDC 2.0 and the new cohort-centric workflow, along with a live demonstration of the Cohort Builder and Analysis Center. A basic overview of the new analysis tools is provided using example cohorts with in-depth discussions of specific tools scheduled for subsequent webinars.
Intended Audience
This webinar is designed for researchers interested in delving deeper into the genomic analysis capabilities of the recently launched NCI Genomic Data Commons (GDC) 2.0. It caters to those interested in analyzing and downloading cancer genomics data, regardless of prior genomics experience.
Abstract
GDC 2.0 is a major update to the original GDC Data Portal introduced in 2016. This latest version adopts a “cohort-centric” workflow, in which users build custom sets of cases to analyze, and introduces several new gene- and variant-level analysis tools. New features of the GDC 2.0 Data Portal include:
- The Cohort Builder tool for creating and editing cohorts using a range of case and data features
- Many new interactive gene- and variant-level data analysis tools that are accessed directly in the web browser
- A new Analysis Center acts as a central hub for accessing the tools available for analyzing a user’s cohort
Join us for a tour of GDC 2.0 and the new cohort-centric workflow. We will provide a live demonstration of the Cohort Builder and Analysis Center. A basic overview of the new analysis tools will be provided, with in-depth discussions of specific tools scheduled for subsequent webinars.
For additional details, please see the Introducing GDC 2.0 Webinar Presentation.
Included Topics
- Overview of GDC 2.0’s updated cohort-centric workflow
- Step-by-step demonstration of constructing and refining cohorts using the new Cohort Builder
- Exploring available data using the Projects tool
- Example cohort analysis using tools available in the Analysis Center: Gene Expression Clustering, Mutation Frequency, and Clinical Data Analysis
- Downloading data associated with a cohort from the Repository
- Questions and feedback from users

Intended Audience
This webinar is intended for general users who are interested in learning more about the Human Cancer Models Initiative (HCMI) and available HCMI data in NCI Genomic Data Commons (GDC).
Abstract
The Human Cancer Models Initiative (HCMI) is an international consortium with the goal of generating patient-derived next-generation cancer models (NGCMs) from diverse tumor types as a community resource. HCMI addresses deficiencies in traditional cell lines by collecting patients’ clinical and biospecimen data and providing molecular characterization of the parent tumor, case-matched normal tissue, and the NGCM. These data are harmonized and available at NCI’s Genomic Data Commons (GDC). The HCMI Searchable Catalog is an online resource that allows users to query and identify models using various data elements including clinical and molecular characterization data. The HCMI models and culture protocols are made available to the research community through ATCC. Altogether, the HCMI models and associated data serve as a resource to the scientific community.
Included Topics
- Provide an overview of the HCMI program
- Discuss how HCMI molecular characterization data can be accessed using a variety of GDC services and tools
- Search and identify models of interest on the HCMI Searchable Catalog

Information about this webinar including a video recording is available on the Americal Type Culture Collection (ATCC) Web Site.
The GDC provides the research community with large quantities of molecular, clinical, and imaging data. Learn how to use the GDC Data Transfer Tool (DTT) and Application Programming Interface (API) for high volumes of data transfer.
Intended Audience
This webinar is intended for any cancer researcher who is interested in downloading large data sets from the Genomic Data Commons.
Abstract
The Genomic Data Commons (GDC) provides the cancer research community with large quantities of molecular, clinical, and imaging data. To support the high volumes of data transfer and the varying needs and resources of users, the GDC provides a variety of methods for data transfer, such as the GDC Data Transfer Tool (DTT) and Application Programming Interface (API). This 30-minute webinar will demonstrate use of the DTT and API for downloading large data sets at the GDC. This webinar will also discuss how to troubleshoot data download issues.
For additional details, please see the Downloading Large Data Sets Webinar Presentation.
Included Topics
- Data Download using the DTT
- Data Download using the API
- Troubleshooting Data Download Issues
