Dr. Sturgill earned his Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, and Genomics (CBBG) from the University of Maryland at College Park. After joining the NIH in 2003, he made important contributions to the field of comparative genomics as part of the Drosophila 12 Genomes Consortium, as well as the ENCODE/modENCODE projects. He joined the NCI in 2013 as a staff scientist in the Laboratory of Receptor Biology and Gene Expression, pursuing interests in mammalian genetics, clinical applications of sequencing, and epigenetics. He joined the Center for Cancer Genomics in 2023, now the Office of Cancer Genomics in 2024, where he serves as Project Officer for the Genomic Data Commons.
